Project Spotlight: Upper West Side Penthouse Features Reclaimed Black Walnut Throughout

MS

Mike Sullivan

Owner

Reclaimed black walnut is one of the most beautiful materials we work with, and this Upper West Side penthouse renovation is a testament to what happens when a design team commits to a single material throughout a space.

The Vision

The interior designer's concept was centered on creating a warm, enveloping atmosphere throughout the 3,200-square-foot penthouse. Rather than using different materials for different elements, the design called for reclaimed black walnut everywhere — flooring, built-in cabinetry, kitchen island, bathroom vanities, and custom shelving. The idea was to create a space that felt like the interior of a fine wooden vessel.

Sourcing 6,000 Board Feet

This project required approximately 6,000 board feet of reclaimed black walnut — a significant quantity that we sourced over a three-month period from multiple salvage operations. The largest single source was a furniture manufacturing facility in Pennsylvania that was downsizing and selling off its aged walnut lumber stock. Additional material came from barn and building deconstructions across the Northeast.

The challenge was consistency. While some variation is expected and desired, using the same material throughout a home means the color palette and grain character need to be cohesive. We sorted and curated the walnut carefully, setting aside boards that were too light, too dark, or too different in character from the main lot.

Processing

Different applications required different processing:

  • Flooring: Milled to 3/4" x 5" tongue-and-groove, sanded to 120-grit, finished with a natural penetrating oil
  • Cabinetry stock: Surfaced on all four sides to various thicknesses (3/4", 1", and 1-1/2") for the millwork shop to fabricate into built-ins and kitchen components
  • Shelving: Selected wide boards (10"-14") with live edges preserved, sanded and finished with a clear matte oil
  • Kitchen island slab: A single massive walnut slab, 48" wide and 8' long, flattened and finished as the island countertop

The Finished Space

Walking into this penthouse is a sensory experience. The reclaimed walnut creates a continuous warmth that flows from room to room. The wood's natural variation — the subtle shifts in tone from purple-brown to chocolate to amber — gives each surface its own personality while maintaining visual cohesion.

Natural light from the penthouse's oversized windows plays across the walnut's grain throughout the day, creating constantly shifting patterns of light and shadow. It's one of those projects where the material truly makes the space.

This project is a reminder that when you have the right material and the design courage to commit to it fully, the results can be extraordinary. We're honored to have supplied the walnut that makes this home so special.
